Piriformis Syndrome

The piriformis is a muscle in the lower back/buttock area. The sciatic nerve passes through or near the piriformis muscle. When the piriformis muscle is in spasm, it causes pain in the buttock and in the sciatic nerve down the leg. Injection of the piriformis muscle with steroid and local anesthetic helps to diagnose and treat pain related to the piriformis muscle. Usually repeated injections and physical therapy can keep the piriformis muscle relaxed and free of pain.
